Geeze looks like I need to make a new blog headers today. Hmmm...what will I do..
Anyone have an idea??
What a week!

Well after sleeping in for a few hours on Sunday, I got around to editing the thousands of Miss CT photos from last weekend. I hope to finish posting them today! As you may notice, we have made some drastic improvements to our editing and posting process that will hopefully make the photos quicker and easier to view. Although the photos are posted in low resolution black & white the final purchased product will be in full color. This makes the photos much quicker to load on older computers. OHHHH!!! Before I forget congrats to two wonderful new titleholders! Sharalynn and Acacia! I had a photo session with both of the girls yesterday and jokingly wrote both their names on my phone list so I can learn to spell them correctly since they both have unique names! Today I am hoping to get the final photos posted to my online ordering site so check back later!

Nicole & Louis Il Palio Restaurant

Nicole & Louis made an excellent choice for their reception. I had never been to Il Palio www.ilpalioct.com but I'm certain to return. The warmth of the rooms made me dig out my warming gels as I new I just had to capture everything just the way it was. Restaurant manager Cynthia Robinson made sure everything was just perfect. Kevin Totoian and his band Tangled Vine www.tangledvine.com played classic rock all night long and everything was just perfect! One of Nicole friends even sat in with the band for an impromptu performance. The cake from Lorriane a Sweet Designs www.sweetdesignscakes.com didn't disappoint as usual I've been a fan of her work for years and even toted one of her creations all the way to Manhattan for my own daughters birthday recently.

Bobby & Marcie

My first wedding of the season was fantastic!! Bobbie & Marcie are such a fun loving couple! Marcie's puppy made an excellent little model and posed with the rings, invitation and bouquet like a pro! I just hope she forgives me for not actually coming thru with the car ride we promised her every time we wanted her to perk up for a photo!

Is that a typo Tyra????

Amazing "faces" like former child model & up and coming actress Alexis French are often turmed away from the fashion industry due to height restrictions.
I just got a casting notice from America's Next Top Model and if my eye's haven't deceived me they are searching for ladies UNDER five, foot seven inches?? IS THAT a "TYRA"PO?? If not,I'm very excited about this. As a photographer, I've never had a great preference to photograph only tall models. I know designers love the way their clothes hang on the taller gals on the runway, but I have always preferred girls with smaller statures and even a little weight on them to photograph well, especially facially! Is the fashion industry finally getting a clue?? I often have girls in my studio who want to get into modeling ,but I have to let them know that most agencies will not let them past the receptionist unless the are at least 5'7" or 5'9" in most cases. Only once have I known of an exception and the teen had a face that could bring traffic to a halt. She only got her chance because after being turned away by the receptionst at an open call an agent at Ford Models caught a glimspe of her heading to a coffee shop across the street and herded her back into the agency. She ended up modeling for many cosmetic companies!!

FORMER CONTESTANTS FOR MISS AMERICA'S OUTSTANDING TEEN MAKE IT TO THE TOP 36
ON AMERICAN IDOL
Two former state titleholders continue on in their quest
to become the American Idol
Orlando, FL-- February 12, 2009- The Miss America's Outstanding Teen Organization announced today that two of their former contestants have made it to the next round on American Idol. Arianna Afsar, 17, was Miss California's Outstanding Teen 2005 and Jasmine Murray, 17, was Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen 2007.
Afsar originally auditioned in Phoenix, AZ and Murray auditioned in Jacksonville, FL. Afsar was the first runner-up to Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2006 and started a mentoring program called “Adopt a Grandparent.” Murray was a top 10 finalist and has received recognition for her outstanding community service with the U.S. Dream Academy. Both girls received scholarship money for their achievements.
Miss America's Outstanding Teen, the “little sister” to the Miss America Organization, is a scholarship-based program offering accomplished teens the opportunity to be awarded funds for college. The program promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America's teens. In the past four years, the organization has made available more than $3 million in college scholarships.
"Jasmine and Arianna are two perfect examples of what this country needs as the next America Idol. They are both academic leaders, community activists, and dedicated volunteers,” said Kim Parrish, president of MAOT. “They are well-rounded teens and would set a shining example for other teens to follow. MAOT is proud of these two former contestants."
Both girls will continue on in the competition which can be seen nationally on FOX on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. CST

How do I get my child involved in modeling or acting??
.jpg)
.jpg)
Tis, the season to find an manager or agent as the agencies are preparing their model rosters for the upcoming season. This means they are actively looking for new faces this time of year. There will be open calls etc. Many times I am asked well just how do I get my child into modeling??? My daughter has been a model with a CT agency and a major NYC agency for five years now and I love it more than she does unfortunately. Just what are the agencies looking for??
a) Someone who can trek to the city 2-3 or more a week on short notice!
b) Size 5 & size 10 clothes sizes are most popular (for print)!
c) Kid's that can read beyond their years (for acting)
d) Kid's that can take direction well and have long attention spans.
What are they looking for as far as "a look". That I can't tell you sometimes, I am sometimes surprised at who or who doesn't get called in to sign with an agency, but sometimes I'm told it's due to supply in demand of a certain "type". Any sometimes you need to resubmit again and again until they have an opening for your childs age and "type".
One thing I am certain of is you don't need expensive photos to start with. I hear horror stories in this area all the time. You don't need a $500 photo shoot for a six month year old. Babies generally need a good snapshot and older children just snapshots until you get an agent or manager. However, if you have some professional photos is shows the prospective agents you are serious about modeling and are also ready to go to work. Many will just ask for a good clear snap shot. Once you are in the game, it's time to get a compcard going for modleing and a good headshot for acting. But a good basic shoot shouldn't be too expensive. At our studio we charge $295 for a basic 5 look shoot which it a good starting point for ages 4-early teens. Younger kids and babies can use a one or two looks shoot at $100.00 but again the agents generally use snapshots for the babies because they change so quickly. We can also show you how to submit to agencies and how to prepare a resume.
Just no explanation.

I'm going back to school!!!
Yup it's true, I can't believe it! Well not like real school but I'm taking a web design class to I can take charge of my main website completely. For ten years, I had a wonderful webbie, but she recently retired due to a serious illness. I'll miss her but I feel the need to take charge of my website design. Recently I've noticed that my website isn't behaving when viewed with the Safari Browser. We are working on it, but until then if you want the best experience, try to view my website from an alternate browser like Internet explorer.

Inaugural Balls

Oh my it is that time again. It proves to me that I need to clean my desk as the last set of photos I took at the Texas Society Black Tie & Boots Ball as still sitting on top.
Want to know what it is like to attend an Inaugural Ball? Well I've been to two,one for Ronald Reagan & George H Bush in 1985 and one for Dick Cheney and George W Bush in 2005. Every time I go, I say never again. It is very exciting, don't get me wrong, but I've decided there is only one way to go comfortably and that is to get room in the same complex and arrive there a week in advance. But that is not realistic at $400+ a night. The other way is to be actually related to the President and by any stretch of the the imagination,I am not. Did I mention it is freezing out?? Now the other kicker is you are dressed in a gown and carrying your coat because there is a hour long wait for the coat room. In 1985 there was pig pile of furs on the floor right after the entrance, where people decided to give up, toss it and hope it was still there on the way out. I've never seen anything like since. When you get in, you can't really move to well (check out the photos) or dance really. So if you think you are missing something, think again. I'm going to go to Bow Tie Cinemas as watch it all on the big screen! Photos By Clay & Company and Matthew Gammon

My girls!

The girls that work for me never know what is in store for them when they walk thru the door for work. They could be cleaning the bathroom or standing in for titleholder or a celebrity. A few days ago I got an itch to make up some new backgrounds and test some new lighting. So enlisted Sam to get out of her sweatpants and get into a gown from the prop room. The lighting I was testing didn't work the way I'd hoped, and I quickly reverted back to a past formula and got some cute shots. Here is one of them. You are a good sport Sam.

Three couples will get their wedding pictures taken/retaken FREE this year!
Did your best wedding photo look like this???

I mentioned a while back that I had some exciting news coming but then the holidays hit and it all got crazy around here. We are excited to announce not one but THREE wedding contests!
Pay-it-Forward: Are you a great couple or (know one) that gives back to the community in someway, but have been hit by this economic crisis or other have other things such as a tragic event ruin your ability to hire a professional photographer to capture your memories at your wedding?? If so email us your story! We will pick one couple on February 14th to receive a free wedding coverage courtesy of Catherine Fiehn Photography. Please include these items in your email: Names and contact info, date of the event & town/place of event ,a description of your situation, and an explanation of how you serve your country or community! You may also submit up to three low-resolution photos attached to your email to document your community service, but they are not required. One couple will get free wedding day coverage and two others will receive a post wedding photo session.
I've-Got-To-See-a-Picture-of-THAT!!!: Are you having a crazy, neat-o amazing or unique wedding?? The very type of wedding that would be cool for us to photograph?? Are you a same-sex couple getting married in scuba gear under water? Getting married at the Plaza and the Jackson Five are all in your wedding party or is your wedding cake being made out of "twinkies"?? You get the idea!! Email us about your wedding plans and on February 14th we will be giving away a free wedding coverage!!
Let-us-Not-Forget- Did you get married in the past two years or are celebrating a milestone anniversary but could not afford a professional wedding photographer or did your photos came out so bad you are afraid to show them to your friends?? Email us your story along with your wedding date and on February 14th, one lucky couple will get a free post-bridal session of their dreams courtesy of Catherine Fiehn Photography.
Please put the title of the contest you are entering in the subject of the email. All travel/hotel out of the 50 mile range Connecticut (with the exception of pay-it-foward) is the responsibility of the entrant. For example, if you are getting married on a glacier in Alaska, we might consider that, and your coverage will be free but you will have to pay to get us there!!

Saint Mary's School Class of...I'm not telling.

Tonight I went to a small class reunion for my elementary school. I had a blast, we talked all night. Somehow, it's different then a high school reunion. These kids where like brothers and sister to me for 8 years as we didn't didn't switch classes like we did in high school. I didn't realize how much fun it would be. If you've never organized one, try it. I can't wait for next year!!

The Trouble with Len!

Okay, my friend Len,has "found" photoshop. Every few weeks or so he takes a photo of me and puts it where it shouldn't be. Unfortunately, I live for his emails because more often then not they make my coffee fly out my nose. Here is his latest piece of work. As you can tell, I'm not a proud person. Humor is the best part of life. Sigh!

Christmas in Connecticut
Saturday, November 29, 2008

Well, this isn't a reunion year for me but I did get to join Tina Fey at her class reunion on 30 Rock eposide entitle REUNION as her classmate Patty Costello. The show will air on December 4th on NBC at 9:31. I'm not 100% sure I didn't get edited out but look for me anyways! If I ended up up on the floor (yes they shot film) as least a got to spend a few days with Tina & Alec. Pictured here is my high school BFF Karla who lives in Florida now. Somehow she ended up a model down there for a while. Could it be I took a few too many photos of her while where in high school?

Sam.....

I caught my make up artist Samantha moonlighting playing football on Wednesday night! She told me she couldn't come into work because she had the runs! I guess I won't fire her but this was too darn funny to ignore! She had no idea I was there shooting these pics so the expression on her face when she came in and saw them was priceless!!

Ioannis-A blast from the past!!
When I was a teen I had my first job at a photography studio here in Milford, my boss Steve Cooper had this friend who was over all the time his name was Ioannis and he did really cool airbrush album covers. Sometimes I'd be quietly numbering the backs of wedding proofs and I get called in so they could use one of my body parts for a model or something. Here is a cover I found that I have from those days, I think something of mine may have been used in it. LOL I was just sent a listing for this show! I can't wait to go see it!

Connecticut Art Show (from the Martell Foundation website)

It's almost Thanksgiving!

I'm doing something absolutely crazy this Thanksgiving. Aside from the economy it has been an incredible year and I have a lot to give thanks for this Thursday. I've been to Hawaii, was on 30 Rock and made some great new friends! I'll be heading back to NYC this weekend for a bit, it's interesting but after doing some statistics here at the studio I figured out my average client lives in New York City, weird huh?? Someday I'm going to go to the parade there, but notthis year. I'm sure I will be posting so photos of what I'm doing soon!

PDN Conference
I attended the Photo District News Conference in New York City yesterday. It was great, but my feet are hurting and the guy from Oasis Spa was worth every penny. Coffeetable book are BIG this year and it was great to be able to compare companies first hand to find my bride's the best of the best in quality. I also sat in on some lectures from Dennis Reggie (who was the one to photograph the JFK Jr wedding, which still has to be one of my biggest career regrets. (I'll tell you the story another time as I don't like to talk about it.) and a few others. We will be offering some new and exciting products for our wedding, boudior & baby clients this season as well as offering a great photo booth at events!! Details to come soon.

Deb, Mike, Mike, Mike and a few other nice people. Spring House, Block Island , Rhode Island
I loved shooting this wedding, first of all because I am apologetically bad with names. These guys made it easy for me, because every guy at the wedding was named Mike. The second reason, was it was at Spring House and on Block Island two of my favorite places in the world and I had so much fun with these guys. I could tell that Deb loved taking pictures and if the groom didn't, he faked it at least. For a teenage wedding I think they have a good shot at it. They say you never can tell:)

I never seen such ear to ear grins on these guys!

Well on Wednesday I decided to play hooky from the studio and head up to the Big E with a group of my friend's some of who are in town for a big wedding this weekend that we will shoot. I just happen to mention to them that on the way up I needed to stop of at the Connecticut State Capitol Building to snap a few photos of former Miss CT Heidi Voight who is now working there. Well for some reason, these guys all jumped in and helped me with the shoot, even volunteering to hold Heidi's coffee and purse, go figure. Pictured are front Ted Fiorito, Len Caseria, Heidi Voight & Matthew Gammon.

Alec Baldwin just won his first Emmy for 30 Rock!
It's so weird to be watching him and Tina Fey on the Emmy's right now, being that just over a week ago I worked with them! Tina won one but has been called for her other category yet hasn't been called yet, but I have confidence she will be soon (my fingers are crossed for her)!
Update! Okay she's got two now!! Go 30 Rock!!! I still don't know the air date of the episode I'm in yet,but I'll let you know! Would you believe I forgot to ask?

1661 Inn Block Island, RI
Jen (US) and Duncan (UK) met while touring Australia and have mutual love of nature and animals. It was only fitting that their wedding was attended by a doe, two fawns, two rabbits and several wrens that seemed to perch on a nearby bush as to watch the ceremony. A bit of Hurricane Hanna also made an appearance briefly and stepped out for about a half hour, just long enough for an outside ceremony, then returned full force while guests from both sides of the pond celebrated snugly inside stopping only briefly to catch a centerpiece or two when someone dared to open a door! If it is good luck to have rain on your wedding day, Duncan & Jen are in for many years of happiness!

Mom, Dad! I finally met Mr. Magee!!
When I was a child I had two sisters. We where a handful, especially me. I was deemed hyperactive. That was before the term ADD was coined, but if you are into self-diagnoses I was definateley ADD! Whenever anything weird happened around our house, for example, half of mom's freshly baked rolls where gone mysteriously. She would call us all in to cross examine us and if no one would fess up she would say with a sigh. "Well, I guess Mr. Magee did it then". Over the years in our half-Irish household, Mr. Magee would make an appearance quite often and when we heard of his arrival we knew we where in trouble!
Last Friday night, after returning from his daughters wedding, I realized on the way house, that I'd finally met Mr. Magee!! Eddy this blog photo is payback for all those years you (figurative of course) caused me such trouble!!!

This is Mr. Magee!! In all fairness to Ed he was just being helpful by keeping his daughter bag off the wet ground, but look at the trouble it got him into!

This is me at about three years old probably wondering who the heck Mr. Magee was.

Kristy & Balazs Wedding at Water's Edge Westbrook
Kristy & Balazs are dancers. I don't mean they just like to go clubing. They are both professional dancers and instructors. With many of the guests sharing their profession, the reception was hopping...literally. Guests where entertained all night with broadway caliber presentations including the big event: the first dance foxtrot from the bride & groom themselves complete with ballroon dance attire. The creativity didn't end there! Kristy's best friend & maid of honor Michelle Jette (of Chelle, chellelee143@aol.com) did make up & hair in addition the flowers for the wedding!!! What a talented group!!

The Great S'mores Excursion

I mentioned earlier that my friend Len helped me take pictures at a camp for foster kid's last week. Well, as we where preparing a campfire for the kids, he drew a strange blank when the word s'mores came up. Len had NEVER had a s'more, in fact he didn't even know what one was! So after treating me to lunch at the new Pepe's Pizza in Fairfield (Awesome) last week we set out to Silver Sand's State Park and made some s'mores. I could tell me wasn't all that impressed with the sweetness but at least he tried it!

Scott & Lorena Villa Rosa
Scott & Lorena have the craziest group of relatives and friends I have ever met at a wedding! I truely believe laughter is the best thing in life and with their friends their future will be full of good times to come. What a way to start! I should have been forewarned what antics the rest of the day would hold when the groom had to ask a groomsman to please remove the bottle cap from the middle of his forehead before the formal pictures. (And yes I did get a shot of it before he did!)

Sara & Rich The Inn at Villa Bianca
I haven't been to the Villa in a while. Sara and Rich are close relatives of a good friend of my fathers and we often go to her grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. I was a bit upset that they didn't have any sweet potato balls at the wedding but you can't have everything and I had fun creating some classic and "different" images. Don't worry mom, Rich isn't a "rockstar" in all his photos, just this one.
Miss America's Outstanding Teen!!
I've had a lot of calls and emails about photos at MAOT. Unfortunately, I booked up for the finals night before they announced the dates and the Camp for foster kids that I have been volunteering at for 8 years now ran a week earlier then usual. So... I'm not there in Orlando this year. I hope to attend again next year. Good Luck to all the girls it was such a fun time last year!

To FLASH or not to FLASH!
You might have noticed that my website has a NEW look! It's still a work in progress, but Linda, of Pageant Web Design has been busy with a much needed update to my website. Many people have been asking me WHY did a photographer of my caliber did not go with a flash site?? Well, the reason is simple! I CAN NEVER get through a flash site completely without something messing up or not loading or freezing up. I personally own four computers and it happens with ALL of them. I even looked on one west coast photographer's site and every time I use one of my computers the site pops back up and freezes. What the??? Sooo...I hope my new site is easy to use. If you see any problems, or misspellin's email me fiehnphoto@aol.com so we can fix it! ENJOY!!
Asia & Tyrone
This is Asia. I love this image. She is one lucky girl, a great new husband (Tyrone) and an adorable little miracle (Marcus). They had a big, beautiful wedding with lots and lots of love & pink bridesmaids dresses. Everything a little girl dreams of!! Oh yeah and there was not a shortage of pretty little girls in white either!!

Mrs. RI

This Mrs. RI 2008. I will never forget our shoot. You see I had to cut her out of a $3000 gown when the zipper broke. I didn't know what to do and I wasn't funny at the time but it's better to happen now then at Mrs. America. Strange thing is I bought a pair of seam rippers the week prior to the incident without a real reason too, I was at IKEA and just had to buy something. The day after, I happened to be talking to a local fireman and he said we can call them anytime if something like this should happen again.

Introducing Rachael Ramonas!
Melissa & Jay

I had a blast today at Jay and Melissa's wedding, the food, dueling pianos and cool weather where great. I really felt like I could "create" today. Here are some of my favorite images. Grandpa was the hit of the day with his bow tie and one of the groomsmen seems to be wondering in church if Jay is really going to go through with it!

Posters are now available!

The 2008 Miss CT & Outstanding Teen posters are now avaiable to purchase at www.catherinefiehn.com under "onlone ordering" Please be respectful that all the images on my site and on Photoreflect are copyrighted. As are all the poses that the studio takes at events etc. We also ask that ti insure the quality of our images,no flash photos be taken during our posing sessions. The reason for this is with a large group after a person sees a flash the think my photo has been taken an they often look away from the camera or they look at another camera and not mine etc. In addition so a portion of all photos sales contribute to the Miss CT Scholarship fund. All the photos take during pageant week will be posed online for your viewing pleasure and purchase. Enjoy!
Me & Kenn Venit :)

I know, I know, you are all on here looking for pictures from last night's 80th Jubilee Gala and all you see is a photo of me and Kenn Venit. Well, first of all, it is technically a photo from the gala. And well, I need to tell you why I'm so excited by this image. First things first. I feel it is a good image of me, which doesn't happen often. Got my hair done (courtesy of Patsy at Innovations in Milford)and put the ye olde fake eyelashes on, which I got on myself straight for the first time in my life. You see as most of you know in the pageant industry, putting the critters on straight on another person is fairly easy, but putting them on yourself is an Olympic achievement. Secondly, when I was growing up Kenn was the local newscaster. Against every parenting wish, I watched Kenn & the other newscasters on Channel 8 while eating all my meals. Later on, I would go on to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. I was a TD (the person who directs the person runs the boards and hits the switches for live TV) for one day during a college production and I ran out of the control room clutching my 35mm Canon for dear life. I ran swiftly up the hill to the Spectrum office (the award winning Sacred Heart University student newspaper) and locked myself in the darkroom.
I will post the rest of the gala photos shortly! I'm still recovering. It was quite a party! Photo By Jeanne Caruso Theismann, Miss Connecticut 1980
